Le portugais a deux genres et un système flexionnel roman proche de l'espagnol, avec des voyelles nasales marquées et des infinitifs personnels (uniques parmi les grandes langues romanes). Les paradigmes verbaux et le subjonctif sont centraux ; les normes européenne et brésilienne diffèrent notamment sur le placement des pronoms et la deuxième personne du singulier.
