El español (castellano) es lengua oficial en España y se habla en toda Hispanoamérica. También es oficial en Guinea Ecuatorial y es una segunda lengua muy estudiada en Estados Unidos, Brasil y Europa occidental.

Unos 500 millones de personas hablan español como lengua materna; las cifras que incluyen segunda lengua suelen acercarse a 600 millones.
Gramática y estructura
El español es una lengua romance mayoritariamente sintética: los verbos llevan terminaciones ricas de persona, tiempo y modo; sustantivos y adjetivos concuerdan en género (masculino/femenino) y número. El orden de palabras es más flexible que en inglés y a menudo se omiten los pronombres de sujeto porque la terminación verbal identifica al sujeto. Los aprendices trabajan ser vs. estar, el subjuntivo y la colocación de los pronombres átonos.
